insitu.reviews was born from an idea of Gavin Youngs and Alessandro Bonavita.
The idea –A seemingly random design object appears in a home without context, without known author, without explanation: to simply be lived with and experienced. Outside of the usual contextual framework, design is forced to speak for itself… and be spoken-to. A disruption to the conventional design review.
The first three films evolved organically collecting three distinct Milanese voices – Carla Vanni (Grazia Fashion Editor), Teresa Esponti (Psychologist) and Pupi Solari (Entrepreneur). Each reviewer judges a work from designers Germans Ermičs , Formafantasma and Productora.
In each film, the distinct candour and personality of the reviewer frames design objects in a new light, resulting in a delightfully prismatic dance between character, design and the film-makers.
Gavin Youngs, film director at The Apiary, works across the worlds of dance and design. Commissions include work for The Australian Ballet, The Royal Ballet, Studio Wayne McGregor, SBS (STUDIO) and Aesop to name a few. For insitu.reviews Youngs joined forces with art director Alessandro Bonavita. Bonavita works across fashion, design and advertising for boutique studios as well as International advertising houses.
